Writer/Producer Michael Hanrahan of Moodbooks wanted special treatment for the 'Enhanced eBook' version of his new novel, The Last Extinction, an eco-thriller for the young adult audience. His basic idea was to include filmed or animated sequences to set the mood and draw the audience in to his world.
As Creative Director on the project, Steve Buccellato worked closely with Hanrahan to choose key scenes and images that deserved special treatment. The challenge was to depict details from the book, without spoiling the contribution that readers bring to the story: their own imaginations. Therefore, none of the main characters would be featured, except occasionally in the shadows or from the rear. The sequences were chosen to enhance the written prose, not to duplicate, replace or spoil.
After choosing scenes and drawing storyboards, Legendhaus assembled and directed a team of international 2D and 3D digital artists to create the multi-layered images to be animated in Adobe After Effects. Using subtle movements, simulated camera effects, and sound, the team produced an enormous amount of evocative imagery to be used in the eBook, as well as for marketing purposes. To top it all off, we also provided graphic design for the book itself.
